Like other enslaved Americans denied the basic right of liberty, Mumbet wanted freedom for herself. She acted upon this desire by taking her master to court. Though little was recorded about this courageous woman but uncovered letters, court records, public deeds, articles, and essays to reconstruct her remarkable life. This book portrays Mumbet as a tough, determined individual who, although dedicated to her work, was equally devoted to gaining personal independence. As we seek insight into those who sowed the first seeds of denial, Mumbet reminds us of the absolute outrage and courage needed to overthrow an established way of life.
